4th Multi-Domain Task Force Officially Activates

Fort Carson, CO – The 4th Multi-Domain Task Force was officially activated with a ceremony held at Fort Carson, Colorado, Oct. 8, 2026.

This new unit, commanded by Col. Hugh W. A. Jones, marks the latest step in the Army's strategic modernization to counter near-peer adversaries in an increasingly complex global landscape. The 4MDTF formation includes nearly 2,100 Soldiers.

“While we build this formation to deter aggression and preserve peace, if war comes, we must be prepared to fight and win,” said Jones. “We owe those in harm's way every advantage we can give them, while leaving our enemy nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.”

This activation culminates a strategic initiative that began in 2017 with a pilot program in the Pacific. It follows the establishment of the 1MDTF at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; the 2MDTF in Germany; and the 3MDTF in Hawaii.

The task force is designed to synchronize long-range precision fires and effects to disrupt and disaggregate sophisticated enemy anti-access/area denial networks. With an operational focus on the Indo-Pacific region, the unit will provide combatant commanders with a versatile and potent array of options across all domains—land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace.

“As we build this formation, we must never forget that technology earns its value in the hands of well-trained and disciplined Soldiers,” said Jones. “A Soldier who solves a difficult problem here may make the difference for an American fighting far beyond the horizon.”

4MDTF can see, sense, make sense of, and understand adversary systems, nodes, and relationships across multiple echelons, then layer multiple cumulative effects that enable joint maneuver and effects.

Maj. Gen. Bernard Harrington, commander of the 7th Infantry Division (Multi-Domain Command – Pacific), spoke on the 7th Inf. Div. legacy of transformation and 4MDTF being a part of that history, stating, "YOU are driving the change our nation demands today, to meet the changing character of war, to prevent conflict, and to maintain a free and open Pacific alongside our allies and partners."

The activation of the 4MDTF represents a milestone in the Army's ongoing strategic modernization. Along with the 1MDTF, 4MDTF reports to the 7th Inf. Div., designated as the multi-domain operational headquarters.

The MDO HQ’s ability to coordinate multi-domain units and effects provides Joint Force commanders options to integrate maneuver, fires, air defense, electronic warfare, and other capabilities across the Pacific.
