New Marine Corps Base Hawaii Barracks Pass Halfway Mark

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII — Construction of two new bachelor enlisted quarters at Kaneohe Bay has passed the halfway mark, with structural work topped out and crews advancing work on building systems and interiors.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii’s $174.6 million project was approximately 53% complete as of Oct. 1, 2026. The two connected, five-story buildings will provide 190 rooms accommodating up to 380 military personnel, replacing quarters that have reached the end of their usable life.

“These new quarters are an investment in our Marines and their readiness,” said Capt. Andrew Hunt, executive officer of NAVFAC Hawaii. “Providing modern, comfortable places to live helps Marines rest, recharge and stay focused on their mission. We’re proud to work alongside our installation and construction partners to deliver these facilities.”

The project team includes NAVFAC Hawaii’s Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), installation stakeholders, designers, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers. Regular design and construction discussions help the team resolve installation details and coordinate work across multiple trades.

According to Dave Robbins, a ROICC MCBH construction manager, the field workforce is central to that effort. Concrete crews, equipment operators, installers, tradespeople, quality-control personnel and safety staff translate the design into completed facilities. Recent milestones include structural topping out and the installation of windows and railings throughout the facilities. Installation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems has progressed through the first three floors. A mockup room helps the team evaluate finishes, coordinate building systems and establish workmanship standards before repeating the work throughout both buildings.

Crews have also completed more than 170,000 field man-hours without a lost-time injury.

The project’s safety culture reflects the daily commitment of field personnel, supervisors, subcontractors and safety professionals to maintaining a safe work environment, according to Robbins.

Once completed, the quarters will include passenger elevators, duty offices, laundry and vending areas, and multipurpose spaces with kitchens and restrooms. Additional amenities include gear wash and drying areas, bicycle storage and recreational pavilions.

The project also includes roadway and parking improvements, sidewalks, landscaping, supporting utilities, a central plant and an emergency generator.

The project is scheduled for completion in June 2029.

NAVFAC Hawaii delivers construction, engineering and contracting capabilities to enhance U.S. Navy and Marine Corps warfighting lethality and fulfill its role as the Department of War’s construction agent.
