USFK Commander to Industry at TechNet: ‘Design Combined from the First Line of Code’

Gen. Xavier T. Brunson, commander of United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and U.S. Forces Korea, urged military and defense industry leaders to prioritize seamless coalition networks during the 2026 TechNet Indo-Pacific conference in Honolulu.

Speaking at the region's largest strategic technology forum, Brunson addressed this year’s core theme of decision superiority and the critical need to integrate partner nations into modern command and control architectures.

He challenged industry partners to fundamentally change how they approach technology development for the battlefield, declaring, "The age of going it alone is dead." Reflecting on his engagements throughout the conference, Brunson emphasized that developers must build new systems with allies integrated from the outset, rather than attempting to "bolt them on later."

For the tri-command, bridging the digital gap between U.S. and Republic of Korea systems is essential to maintaining "fight tonight" readiness and continuously integrated deterrence.

"Allied interoperability is not a technical convenience; it is the imperative behind every information advantage," Brunson stressed to the audience.

To achieve the speed and integration required for future conflicts, he issued a clear directive to engineers and planners shaping the next generation of defense technology: "Design combined from the first line of code."

Backing this directive with a practical challenge, Brunson invited defense developers to travel to the Korean Peninsula to test their capabilities in contested, real-world environments. He urged industry to adopt open, modular frameworks and to collaborate directly with joint operators on the ground, stressing that rapid, aggressive iteration is required to uncover and fix system vulnerabilities before they can be exploited in a crisis.

TechNet Indo-Pacific 2026 brings together government, industry, and academia leaders to advance mission effectiveness through integrated capability development, focusing on interoperable architectures that support joint and coalition operations across the theater.
